This brown twin unit, comprised of two 33' twin bay hoppers with rib sides, runs on black Bettendorf trucks. These hoppers have large white "SOUT" & "HERN" lettering on both A and B units. Formed around several groups of earlier built AAR hoppers, these two hoppers were permanently coupled together as 'twin unit articulated' coal cars, each unit being a self-clearing hopper with an average cubic capacity of 2,045 cu. ft. Apparently, the idea was to gain a rate concession for what would be a single car shipment. The practice started in the early 60's and disappeared by the late 1974-early 1975 time frame.
